NGORONGORO CRATER
The Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Tanzania’s most breathtaking natural wonders and arguably the best place in the country to see the iconic Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and the rare black rhino. As the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it offers dramatic landscapes and an unparalleled density of wildlife. However, due to its global popularity, the Crater can become quite crowded, especially during peak seasons. For this reason, we recommend spending two nights here to experience its highlights before continuing to the Serengeti for a more secluded and peaceful safari adventure.
No journey through Northern Tanzania is complete without visiting the Ngorongoro Crater. Set against a backdrop of sweeping highlands and ancient volcanic terrain, it is one of the most scenic and fertile regions in Africa. The Crater itself serves as a natural enclosure for a thriving ecosystem, making it an extraordinary place for game drives. Beyond the wildlife, the area also offers meaningful cultural encounters with the Maasai people, whose traditional lifestyle and vibrant customs add a rich human dimension to your safari.
When it comes to accommodation, travelers can choose between staying on the Crater rim or in the nearby town of Karatu. Lodges perched on the rim provide stunning panoramic views and easy access to early morning game drives into the Crater. Alternatively, Karatu offers a quieter, more relaxed setting with smaller, better-value lodges nestled among coffee plantations and rolling hills. Many of these properties also offer activities such as guided walks, mountain biking, and cultural tours—perfect for those looking to experience more than just wildlife.
